Board of visitors 2018 Election

Every two years, The ACRN Alumni Society elects a new Board of Visitors, and it’s that time again now!

You’re already a proud Rock Lobster, and you might even remember the differences between “Alumni,” “Alumnus,” and “Alumna”, but that’s not a prerequisite for being on the board, so don’t worry if you don’t. We’re just looking for people who are passionate about ACRN and want to give back to the student organization that meant so much to us during our time at Ohio University.

Here are some great things we’ve accomplished in the board’s last term:

We started a scholarship for ACRN students and raised over $25,000 from alumni at-large!

Our scholarship chair, Scott Smith, was nominated for a Volunteer of the Year award from the Ohio University Alumni Association!

We hosted several Alumni / Student networking events in Athens, Columbus, and New York City!

We connected the current students with ACRN alums in the media and tech industry for Skype sessions and internship opportunities!

We helped the station fund a new studio console (and it wasn’t even a hand-me-down this time)!

Here are some questions to get the juices flowing for what YOU could do with the ACRN Alumni Board:

How can we raise even more money, either for the scholarship or for station capital/equipment needs?

How can we connect more students with jobs and internships in media and tech?

How can we help to coach the station’s long-term future from a business standpoint?

Right now our main form of communication with alumni is through Facebook. How can we fortify other communication channels so we’re not putting our eggs in one basket?

How can we make sure that all of our alumni’s memories from their time at ACRN are captured, archived, and digitized for us to enjoy for years to come?

We’ve come in way under budget the last two years. The university has rules about what we can do with that budget, but what are some ways we could put more of that money to use toward the Society’s goals?

Now that you’re excited about running for a board position, here are the details on what’s involved:

We’re looking for volunteers to fill all six chairs on the ACRN Alumni Society Board of Visitors.

Nominees will run for a specific position. We have a general summary for the available roles here.

Some of our existing board members will also be running in the election, but not necessarily for the same chairs where they currently serve. The board’s current president, Jason Robinaugh, will not be running for re-election but will continue to be available as a resource for the incoming president and the rest of the board as needed.

Nominations will be open until June 1. The election itself will also happen in June, and the new term will take effect on July 1.

Winning nominees will serve on the board from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2020.

We have a conference call the third Tuesday of each month (although you could move that if the new board votes to do so). We also communicate pretty regularly over email and try to meet in person at least once a year. You can eat Casa Nueva that often, right?

Our main goals are to keep alumni informed about ACRN, raise money to support ACRN, and help nurture the students’ and the station’s future growth.

We have an annual budget from the Ohio University Alumni Association for events, in exchange for some minimum requirements that must be met (i.e. two or more live events each year that meet certain criteria). Once you’re on the board, we’ll give you all the fine print and put you in touch with our liaison from Ohio University, Tyler, who’s a great resource and also works closely with the Marching 110 Alumni and other great groups.
